Skyviews

2019

Flying back and forth across the United States every month for over a year, I found the window seat provided the best entertainment of all. What is the relationship between all those lines and forms down there? How does nature, particularly water, cut through and along the Earth? How do humans outline their functions - driving, living, farming - against the uneven boundaries of mountains, rivers and lakes? Flying at night, lights zig-zagging across the landscape reveal how an area once was settled along a meandering river. Flying during the day, I took in suburban grids, dramatic water edges, sculpted ice, the magic of circular rainbows and the gentle line between day and night. Through digital illustration, I accentuate these lines and forms, yielding abstract pieces that bring a familiar landscape into something new, into a Skyview.
